Two killed, 25 injured in post-poll violence in Bengal

Two persons, including a Communist Party of India-Marxist activist, were killed, 25 injured and one kidnapped in post-poll violence in West Bengal on Friday.

A CPI-M worker was killed in a clash between CPI-M and Congress activists at Moregram in Birbhum district, Inspector General (Law and Order) Prasun Mukherjee told reporters in Calcutta.

One person was killed when a bomb he was making exploded at Ranghat village in Malda district, district Additional Superintendent of Police N Kaushik said.

Two Trinamul Congress supporters were seriously injured when a bomb was hurled at their motorcycle at Tangra allegedly by CPI-M activists, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Raj Kanojia said in Calcutta.

The duo were also beaten up with rods and staves, he said. They were admitted to hospital where the condition of one was stated to be serious.

Altogether 15 persons were injured in post-poll violence in Calcutta, Kanojia said.

Ten people were injured when CPI-M and Trinamul Congress activists clashed with bombs, scythes and lathis at Bainchi and Golgram villages in Midnapore district on Friday evening, the police said.

Four persons were arrested after the clashes.

Meanwhile, Trinamul candidate for Pingla seat Raj Kumar Dey, in a complaint to district Superintendent of Police A K Malliwal, alleged that a party worker was kidnapped and houses of ten of his supporters were ransacked by CPI-M cadres.

An FIR was lodged by the party at Pingla police station, he said.

RAF personnel and armed police were deployed in Midnapore in view of the tension.

Security was tightened at Tangra, Topsia, Beniapukur, Beliaghata and Phoolbagan following incidents of bomb-throwing since Thursday night, Kanojia said.

Central forces would remain in Calcutta till May 17 as a precautionary measure during counting, he added.
