Child sacrifice accused in custody
till June 13

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The prime accused in the child sacrifice episode, which shocked the villagers of Ramakrishna hamlet in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, and her 15-year-old son Suresh were remanded to judicial custody till June 13 by the principal munsif magistrate of Karimnagar town on Wednesday evening.

While Pochamma was shifted to the women's central prison in Warangal town, Suresh was sent to a juvenile home.

The district police, in an official release, claimed that Pochamma admitted to killing the infant Naveen on May 24 in a bid to get rich overnight.

Along with Suresh, Pochamma kidnapped Naveen, the only son of a couple that lived in a rented portion of their house, and sacrificed him to the local deity by mutilating him.

The child's nose and ears were chopped off and his abdomen slit. He was strangled and his body dumped into the septic tank of the house.

Following a complaint by Naveen's parents Sudhakar and Vanitha, police recovered the body and took Pochamma and her son into custody.

Soon after the incident, villagers ransacked and burnt Pochamma's house and imposed social boycott on her family.
