BJP to field Kalraj for UP RS poll

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday decided to field Uttar Pradesh party chief Kalraj Mishra and Bibi Gurcharan Kaur from UP and Punjab respectively for the June 11 Rajya Sabha elections.

Their names have been approved by BJP Central Election Committee, according to party general secretary Narendra Modi.

The BJP's focus will be on the UP seat, which fell vacant following the resignation of Rajnath Singh who took over as the state's chief minister.

The Punjab seat fell vacant after Shiromani Akali Dal Rajya Sabha member Rajmohinder Singh Majitha resigned following his election to the state assembly.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had on Wednesday stated that in a move to strengthen the SAD-BJP alliance, the party had decided to allocate the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab to the BJP.
