Rioting erupted in a village near Jalgaon in Maharashtra on Friday, even as sporadic Hindu-Muslim clashes continued in Malegaon near Nasik.
According to the state police control room in Bombay, Hindu and Muslim mobs clashed in Parola village in Jalgaon district, about 240 km from here, in the afternoon. The clashes left a number of people injured.
The cause of the outbreak of violence was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, the situation in the riot-affected Malegaon town near Nasik is reported to be tense, though police said normalcy has been restored to the powerloom town.
Curfew was relaxed from 7 am for eight hours in Malegaon and in some neighbouring areas curfew was lifted for the entire day.
Stray incidents of violence and arson, however, continued in some areas.
Senior officials, including Additional Director General of Police O P Bali, Collector Kishor Gajibhiye, are camping in Malegaon.
