4 arrested for intruding into IAF base

Four people have been arrested on charges of spying on an Indian Air Force base in West Bengal, police said on Saturday.

The four were caught by security officials at the Kalaikunda air base in Kharagpur district, some 130 km south of Calcutta.

It is one of the oldest airbases in eastern India and was extensively used by the British during World War II.

"The accused intruded into the air base on Friday night from its western side, where MIG-27 aircraft are stationed, after snapping the barbed wire fencing," senior police official K C Meena said.

They have been identified as Koirali Molla, Inder, Mohihar and Phul Singh, Meena said adding a map of the air base was seized from one of them.

They were produced before a district court, which remanded them to police custody for two weeks.

Police said the four were being interrogated. "They are giving different versions about where they are from," Meena said.
