Fierce gunbattle near Surankote, J&K;
17 killed

At least eight militants and nine armymen, including two officers, were killed in a fierce gun battle at Hillkaka village near Surankote in Poonch district of Jammu region, police sources said on Tuesday.

However, defence sources put the number of armymen killed at five, including a major and a junior commissioned officer.

The police sources said a patrol party was moving towards the upper reaches in Surankote area when militants ambushed it at around 12:30 pm.

In the ensuing gunbattle, Major Ashok Sangli of 17 Maratha Infantry, a JCO and seven soldiers died were killed. The militants took eight casualties, they said.

Reinforcements were rushed to the area to assist the patrol party, the sources said.

The gunbattle was on when last reports came in from the area.
