Strike brings Kashmir valley to standstill

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

A general strike called by the Kashmir bar association against the implementation of the Prevention Of Terrorism Ordinance crippled normal life in the Kashmir valley on Wednesday.

Police chased away youths shouting slogans against POTO at Safakadal, Ahmednagar, Lal Baazar, Batmallo and Maisuma.

Sources said the youths came out on the streets and pelted stones on police personnel and vehicles.

All shops and business establishments in the valley remained closed.

Most of the government offices, banks and educational institutions were also closed.

Skeleton traffic plied on the city routes and the administration had to make tight security arrangements to maintain law and order.
