Top Hizb man among 8 militants killed, RDX seized in Kashmir

Eight militants, including a self-styled area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, were killed in separate encounters with security forces in the Kashmir valley, where a militant surrendered and 20 kgs of RDX was seized since Thursday night, official sources said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, security forces reached Vilgam forest in Kupwara district in north Kashmir early on Friday, where hiding militants resorted to firing, they said. In the ensuing gun-battle, three unidentified militants were killed, they added.

Yasin Ahmad Lone alias Khalid Saifullah, a self-styled area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed along with an associate in an encounter with security forces in Ganderbal area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday evening, the sources said.

Two militant hideout were also busted during the operation, which led to the recovery of a pistol, a grenade and some ammunition, they said.

Four other militants, two each at Nasbal-Sumbal in Baramulla and Shanipora-Khansahib in Badgam districts, were killed by army search parties on Thursday night, they said adding three AK rifles, one under-barrel grenade launcher, six grenades and some ammunition were recovered from them.

The army raided the house of a militant in Handwara area of Kupwara during a search operation on Thursday, where 20 kgs of RDX and a grenade were recovered, the sources said.

A militant Javid Ahmad Bhat surrendered before the army along with an AK assault rifle and some ammunition at Haripora-Handwara on Thursday, the sources added.
