A Muslim girls' school in Calcutta has allegedly been threatened with dire consequences by an unknown Islamic outfit if it did not make burqa or veil compulsory for students above 15 years of age, police said on Friday.
The CMO Girls' School received a letter on October 2 saying that if the school authorities did not make the veil compulsory for students above the age of 15 from October 5, it would have to face "serious consequences".
The letter was sent by an organisation that identified itself as Mujahid-e-Islami
The police are looking into a complaint by the school authorities and have posted a few guards at the school. They are, however, not ruling out that it could be a hoax.
Police sources at the central police headquarters told Indo-Asian News Service that they did not have any information on any organisation called the Mujahid-e-Islami.
The letter, addressed to the school principal, was written in Urdu and sent by ordinary post, the police said.
