Four airmen killed in LTTE raid

Four Sri Lankan airmen were killed and seven others injured when LTTE rebels attacked an air force detachment in eastern Sri Lanka just after midnight on Tuesday, a military spokesman said on Wednesday.

A large group of rebels targeted the base, located about 10 km from Trincomalee, but was repulsed after a gun battle, which lasted nearly four hours, Brig Sanath Karunaratne said.

There were no details on casualties among the militants, he said, adding that army reinforcements were rushed to the spot.
