BSP MLAs in UP decide to step down

In a bid to mount pressure for early assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, all the 46 Members of Legislative Assembly of the Bahujan Samaj Party decided to resign on Wednesday, a day after a similar move was taken by the Congress.

Making an announcement to this effect in Lucknow, BSP vice president Mayawati told reporters that as the current assembly's tenure expired on Wednesday, her party MLAs were resigning from their membership 'in keeping with the people's sentiments who had elected the MLAs for a period of five years only'.

She said all the MLAs would submit their resignations before the Speaker Kesari Nath Tripathi later on Wednesday.

Earlier last month, the Samjwadi Party MLAs had also resigned to press for early polls in the state.

She urged the Election Commission to exercise its powers and conduct polls in Uttar Pradesh at the earliest, while accusing the state government of playing with technicalities to prolong the term of the house.

The senior BSP leader also expressed hope that elections in the state would be held soon since a government without an opposition had no meaning.

She demanded that Chief Minister Rajnath Singh resign from his post and polls be conducted under President's rule.
