West Bengal: 8 dead, 52 ill after drinking illicit liquor

Eight people died and 52 others took ill after consuming illicit liquor at a village in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Thursday, police said in Calcutta.

Some people of the village, under Joynagar police station, consumed the liquor on Wednesday night after returning from a visit to Durga puja pandals in Joynagar and were taken ill immediately, they said.

While eight of them died on Thursday morning, others were admitted to the local Padmarhat hospital, nearby nursing homes and in Calcutta hospitals, police said.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Baruipur) Kalol Gorai rushed to the spot with a large contingent of policemen.
