Curfew in Malegaon as three killed in police firing

A dawn-to-dusk curfew was imposed in the powerloom town of Malegaon, about 110 km from Nasik in Maharashtra, on Friday afternoon after three persons were killed and ten others seriously injured as police fired at two places to control stone-pelting mobs.

Police said the trouble started when the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel deployed in the area snatched handbills being distributed by the people of a particular community, who were returning from their Friday prayers, asking people to boycott US goods to protest the American strikes on Afghanistan.

Enraged, the people resorted to heavy stone-pelting and set several shops on the Kidwai Road, Mohammed Road and Mosam Bridge localities afire and also beat up an SRP jawan and set their van on fire.

When a lathicharge failed to bring clashing groups of two communities under control, the police opened fire at Sangmeshwar and Agra Road localities, in which three persons were killed and ten seriously injured while several others were injured in stone pelting, police added.

Security has been strengthened in the area and senior district and police officials have rushed to the troubled spot.

The situation is at present tense but under control, police added.
