Thackeray attacks Centre's offering of logistics to US

In a sharp attack on the Vajpayee government's offer to assist the US-led battle against terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray on Friday night said that India, instead of offering its air bases to the US, should make available food to people facing starvation deaths and jobs to unemployed youths.

"What kind of largesse is this?" he asked, referring to India's offer to provide logistics to US in its fight against terrorism, 'which has not been sought by the superpower'.

The warehouses in the country are full with foodgrains but still starvation deaths were taking place and sugar was being exported to Pakistan, Thackeray said at the party's annual Dussehra rally in Bombay.

The Sena chief assailed the Centre for inviting Pakistani President Gen Parvez Musharraf for the Agra summit saying, "Musharraf has not even been elected democratically?"

Thackeray, however, said "If at all mid-term polls are held, then they (Shiv sainiks) must fully back the saffron party."

Attacking Muslim fundamentalist groups for making burqa (veil) compulsory for Muslim women, Thackeray dared them to throw acid on the face of Musharraf's wife who, he said, does not wear a veil.
