Decision on probe into Malegaon incident after collector's report: Maharashtra CM

The Maharashtra government would decide about ordering an inquiry into the Malegaon incident only after seeking a report from the district collector, state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters in Delhi on Wednesday.

Deshmukh had separate meetings with AICC general secretary Ambika Soni and treasurer Motilal Vora, who is in charge of party affairs in Maharashtra, regarding the Malegaon incident.

Deshmukh's meetings with senior party leaders came a day after reports that AICC minority department chairman A R Antulay had expressed anguish over the police firing on demonstrators at Malegaon, which left several dead.

Antulay, a former chief minister of the state, is believed to have sent a note to party president Sonia Gandhi on the issue.

Deshmukh's talks with central leaders also came a day after the Congress Working Committee virtually washed its hands off the demand for a separate state of Vidarbha, which has angered Congress leaders from the region.

"I will go by whatever the AICC decides in the matter," Deshmukh said when asked about the demand to review the CWC decision.
