Heavy rains lash UP, 141 dead

Heavy rains in the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh in the last four days has already claimed 141 lives, even as the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday sounded a red alert in the affected districts.

Various rivers in these places are also on the rise, an official spokesman added.

The spokesman, however, said that no district has so far been declared flood-affected, and that all the casualties were from rain-related incidents.

Maximum casualties were reported from Sultanpur (14), Lakhimpur Kheri (12), Azamgarh (11) and Saharanpur, Kushinagar and Ambedkarnagar (10 each) followed by Ballia (9), Lalitpur (7), Raebareli (6), Varanasi, Hardoi, Faizabad, Gonda, Hamirpur and Balrampur (5 each).

Rainwater has affected more than 60,000 hectares of agricultural land in 1,000 villages of the state, taking in its grip a population of about 400,000 people.

Water has damaged over 1,000 houses partially or fully, killing several herds of cattle.

Azamgarh has so far been the worst affected district in the state, where about 200,000 people have been left marooned in the rainwater.

The spokesman said relief and rescue operations have been launched in the districts.

As many as 544 boats have been pressed into service for rescue operations, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, widespread rains were reported in eastern parts of the state in the last 24 hours. A maximum rainfall of 17 cms was reported from Rigauli, followed by 15 cm in Kakrahi, 13 cm in Balmikinagar, 10 cm in Gorakhpur, 8 cm in Balrampur, 7 each in Turtipar and Ayodhya, 4 cm in Pallia Kalan and 3 cm in Sultanpur.
