5 women handed 1-year RI for tonsuring a man

Five women were sentenced to one-year of rigorous imprisonment for forcibly tonsuring a man in their neighbourhood.

Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate M Gandhi also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on the accused women.

The victim, T Ramakrishna, 25, had caused injury to Lakshmi, his neighbour, when she tried to interfere in a domestic scuffle between him and his wife.

The residents of the Ambedkar Nagar slum, including the husband of Lakshmi, brought the victim and handed him over to the women.

Thereafter, the five accused -- Lakshmi (24), Padma (28), Venkatamma (28), Chandramma (28) and Laxmi (23) -- tonsured the victim to humiliate him in public.

The magistrate also sentenced three male accomplices of the accused -- Shankar (24), Ashok (35) and Ranganath (34) -- to nine-month rigorous imprisonment.
