BSF commandant, 5 jawans killed in Udhampur landmine blast

A commandant of the paramilitary Border Security Force, and his five security guards were killed in a massive landmine explosion at village Dhumkund in the Udhampur district of Jammu region on Saturday morning.

The police sources said the bullet proof vehicle of the 161 battalion commandant was completely destroyed in the blast.

As the news about the bombing reached Udhampur and Ramban, reinforcements accompanied by senior officers rushed to the spot.

The sources added that the bodies would be brought to Ramban by Saturday afternoon.

They said massive combing operations have been ordered in the area.

The police sources admitted that militants have intensified their activities in the Doda and Udhampur districts.

No group has yet admitted responsibility for the blast.

Early on Saturday morning, police sources said militants detonated an IED on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway resulting in serious injuries to an army soldier.

Another IED planted on the road was detected by the road opening parties of the army and was later diffused.

Police said the traffic on the highway was disrupted.

Meanwhile, police said one schoolgirl was killed and 13 others were wounded in a powerful explosion at Mattan in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Saturday morning.

The school children were on way to a health resort of Pahalgam, when their bus hit a planted improvised explosive device near Mattan.

Police sources said the bus was substantially damaged.

The injured school children were shifted to hospital.

The sources added that school children in two other buses had a miraculous escape.
