The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, in the United States on Tuesday, had immediate repercussions in New Delhi with all America-bound flights out of Indira Gandhi International Airport being immediately suspended.
States-bound passengers have been shifted to nearby hotels.
"We will get orders relating to resumption of flights later in the day," a United Airlines official told rediff.com. "Meanwhile, we are trying to adjust passengers who were supposed to disembark at en-route points, on our other flights."
It is estimated that it could take a day or two before regular services are resumed, and that puts airlines offices in a spot.
"The phones have not stopped ringing here since yesterday," an official said. "We get calls about flight status, calls from people wanting to rebook tickets, or to cancel them, and as of now, we have no information on when flights will resume. It is chaotic."
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at IG International Airport and all important installations in the capital, following a red alert issued by the Intelligence Bureau, with special attention being paid to the Air Traffic Control Tower.
Police have also been asked to monitor carefully all parking lots, and elite commandoes from the National Security Guard have been deployed inside the airport.
