14 militants killed, intrusion bids foiled in Kashmir

Security forces gunned down 14 militants, most of them foreign mercenaries, when they were trying to sneak into the Kashmir valley from across the Line of Control in Kupwara sector, a defence spokesman said on Thursday.

On noticing groups of heavily-armed militants trying to infiltrate through Tangdhar, Meelyal, Kangdoor and Nowshera sectors of Kupwara on Wednesday, ambush parties fanned out to intercept them, he said.

The militants were asked to surrender soon after they crossed into Indian territory from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

However, they opened fire and in the retaliatory action by security forces, 14 infiltrators, mostly foreign mercenaries, were killed, the spokesman said.

Six militants were killed at Tangdhar, five at Meelyal, two at Kangdoor and another at Nowshera, the spokesman said, adding a huge cache of arms and ammunition was seized from them.

Details regarding the arms and ammunition recovered from the militants were awaited as the operation was still continuing, the spokesman said.
