Militants threaten to open fire on
unveiled women in J&K

The militant group spearheading the 'burqa' (veil) drive in Jammu and Kashmir, has threatened to open fire on unveiled women from Friday.

"From September 14, unveiled women would be fired upon," a local newspaper quoting the outfit said in a front-page news item captioned Pardah karo ya goli lay lo (either use veil or face the bullet).

Quoting a tele-statement of the outfit, the paper said it appealed to the principal of the women's college in Srinagar and other educational institutions to motivate the girl students to use 'burqa'.

"In today's time, purdah (veil) is imperative for Muslim women," the statement said adding the responsibility of the consequences of any attack on the unveiled women lay with them (unveiled women).

The militant group had earlier in August carried out an acid attack on two unveiled women in downtown Srinagar. In another incident, unknown persons had thrown paint at a teacher for not wearing a veil.
