Cops raid SIMI offices in 10 states

Scores of activists of Students Islamic Movement of India were arrested on Thursday following raids in different parts of the country, Union Home Secretary Kamal Pande said.

The raids were organised in the wake of the government's decision to ban the radical Muslim outfit.

Pande said the raids, which began on Thursday morning, were carried out in 10 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Reports from Hyderabad said police picked up six office bearers of Students Islamic Movement of India following the Centre's ban imposed on it.

"We have picked up six office bearers, including SIMI's president Akhter Qureshi, secretary Mohammed Yasar, press secretary Ahmed Hussain and former president Javeed Amin for interrogation," a top police officer said.

In another raid in Calcutta, police sealed two offices of SIMI and arrested six of its leaders.

Police officials said some of its activists had gone into hiding in some districts.

City Police Commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty said the police did not have to face any resistance, while making the arrests and sealing off the SIMI offices.

Reports said that special branch police officials raided SIMI offices on Lenin Sarani and Darga Road, and sealed them.

Meanwhile, state police have launched search operations for those SIMI activists, who had gone into hiding after the Centre had put a ban on it during the day.

Officials said SIMI had spread its activities in Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia districts, bordering Bangladesh.
