10 women dead, six injured in road accident in Andhra Pradesh

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Ten women were killed and six injured on Tuesday in a major road accident in the coastal district of Prakasam in Andhra Pradesh.

According to the state police, the accident occurred when an overloaded tractor-trolley carrying 40 agricultural labourers - mostly women - was on its way from Addanki to Venkatapuram village.

The tractor fell into the village tank at Venkatapuram.

Eight women died on the spot and two succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital.

Senior district officials rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations.

The injured women have been admitted to the government hospital at Addanki and the condition of some of them was stated to be critical.

The district collector said that the next of kin of the deceased would be provided ex-gratia by the government under the Apathbandu (group insurance) scheme.
