A clash between people of two communities, which killed two and left over a dozen injured on Sunday, led to tension in Ishaqpur village of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh.
According to officials in Lucknow, the trouble began over the alleged poisoning of fishes in the village pond, which has been the bone of contention between the two communities.
"A madrassa situated next to the pond has been staking claim on it. Dalits have been fishing in the pond for years," a home department official said.
"On Sunday morning, a large number of fishes were found dead in the pond. The dalits suspected poisoning by the madrassa people, following which the clash took place," he added
The violence left two persons dead. Nine of the injured were said to be in serious condition.
