Toll in Kalyan violence reaches 6

Yogesh Pawar in Kalyan

While the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone III, Kiran Shellar, praised his team for "bringing the situation under control", violence continued to spread to other areas of Kalyan, Maharashtra, on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the body of Ashok Walunj, a 34-year old Bajrang Dal worker, was found. In the violence that followed, 5 people were killed.

On Wednesday, the toll reached six, when a body with multiple stab wounds was discovered near the Rohidaswadi area.

"We will be able to say something only after the identity of the deceased is established," Shellar said.

According to him, "Apart from isolated instances of stone throwing there was no further outbreak of major violence."

"Given the kind of resources and manpower at our command we are doing the best we can," he added.

The officer was, however, at a loss to explain how the arson had spread to new areas.

"I have alerted all the police stations in Zone III... If the need arises we will call for more manpower," he assured.

Meanwhile, curfew continued to be clamped on the area under Bazarpeth police limits.
