"Talks are continuously on," he told reporters in New Delhi on his return from a visit to Singapore and Cambodia. "But it has nothing to do with April 14," he added, in apparent reference to BSP vice-president Mayawati's remark that she would like to be sworn in as chief minister on that day, which is Ambedkar's birth anniversary.
Before leaving on the foreign tour, the Prime Minister had said the question of forming a government in Uttar Pradesh would be discussed after his return.
BJP president K Jana Krishnamurthy said in Panaji ahead of the party's national executive meeting beginning on Friday that there was no "concrete proposal" for a BSP-BJP coalition in Uttar Pradesh and the BJP parliamentary board had unanimously decided that the party would sit in the opposition.
But he appeared to be keeping options open when he said the party could decide on the issue at its parliamentary board meeting.
Reports say there is a significant section in the party, including Union Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, who are pushing for a tie-up with the BSP to keep the Samajwadi Party out of power and work for the BJP's revival.
