'Ninety per cent Muslim students boycott board exams'

At least 90 per cent of students belonging to minority community have boycotted the second phase Secondary and Higher Secondary Board examinations that began in some parts of Gujarat amid tight security on Thursday, Badruddin Saikh, a member of Gujarat Relief Committee, claimed.

There are 14,000 minority students.

The boycott came in the wake of rejection of their demands by the government to shift the examination centres to safer places due to continued communal violence in the state. The examinations, however, commenced under tight security in nine cities, including Ahmedabad and Baroda, with 195,000 SSC and HSC students appearing for the exams at 205 centres, official sources said.

The government has installed video cameras at examination centres and arranged special buses with security personnel to carry minority community students to the examination venues.

Earlier, a meeting held on Tuesday night under the aegis of 'Affected Citizens of Ahmedabad' had resolved that the 'minority community shall not participate in the Class ten and Class 12 exams'.
