Police recruit turns out to be KLO militant

The Bengal police are reviewing all recent appointments in the force after a man undergoing constable's training in Darjeeling was arrested when it was discovered that he was a wanted militant of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO).

The activist, Bikash Roy, had even undergone arms training at an ULFA-run camp in Bhutan.

Roy had received his appointment letter for the constable's post in the Darjeeling police on July 27 last year and had departmental training in North Dinajpur district, police said.

He was arrested last week after Bagdogra Circle Inspector Rabindramoni Gurung was tipped off about Roy's links with the KLO, they said.

Gurung passed on the information to North Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Sharma, they added.

Gurung said Roy admitted to all the charges, including receiving arms training in Bhutan.

The police did not lend much credence to Roy's claims that he wanted to join the police force to lead a normal life and was frustrated with terrorism and militant activities.

Consequently, the police were seriously reviewing all fresh appointments to check whether other militants had also joined the force.

Earlier two youths from North Dinajpur district had enrolled in the army as jawans with forged residential certificates, police said adding the two, Anisur Haq and Sirajul Mandal, were now absconding.
