Taj security to be handed over to CISF from May 1

Amidst intelligence reports of a possible terrorist strike to damage the Taj Mahal, a world heritage monument, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh police to hand over the security of the monument to the Central Industrial Security Force from May one.

A bench comprising Justice M B Shah and Justice H K Sema, after hearing counsel for the Archaeological Survey of India A D N Rao, directed the local police and CISF officials to finalise the details.

Government intelligence agencies had recently intercepted certain messages from terrorist networks intending to damage the 17th century Mughal monument of love built by emperor Shahjehan in memory of his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal.

Counsel for Uttar Pradesh, Ajay Agarwal said that the local police had no objection to the CISF taking charge of the security of the complex.

Regarding opening the Taj for night viewing, Rao submitted that it would be decided by the CISF authorities in consultation with the ASI.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a news report about vandalism inside the Mughal monument by activists of the BJP's youth wing in October last year, the court had directed the Uttar Pradesh government to make proper security arrangements.
