200 shops gutted in fire in Kolkata

A devastating fire gutted nearly 200 shops in the Firpos market in the heart of the city late on Tuesday night.

Police sources said nearly 200 shops were either completely gutted or badly affected by the fire.

Gas-cutters were pressed into service to open gates of some of the shops.

Three persons, including two women and a fire brigade personnel, sustained injuries in the fire that broke out around 2115 hours (IST).

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, who complained of poor fire fighting equipment, said an enquiry would be ordered to ascertain the cause of the fire.
