5 fire brigade men injured as part of gutted Kolkata market collapses

At least five fire brigade personnel, including an officer, were injured when a portion of the gutted Firpos market in Kolkata collapsed on Wednesday morning, taking the number of injured in the fire to eight.

The injured fire brigade personnel were admitted to a nearby hospital, police sources said.

The fire that broke out in the nearly century-old market in the heart of the city on Tuesday night and destroyed 200 shops, had not been extinguished at the time this report was filed.

Police said that nearly 200 shops were either completely gutted or badly affected in the fire.

Gas cutters were used to open the gates of some shops affected in the fire,

Earlier, three persons - two women and a fire brigade personnel - were injured in the fire that broke out at around 2115 hours.

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, who complained of poor fire fighting equipment, announced than an enquiry would be ordered to ascertain the cause of the fire.
