The petrol pumps allotment issue continued to paralyse proceedings in the Rajya Sabha with an agitated opposition demanding resignation of Petroleum Minister Ram Naik forcing adjournment of the House for the fifth day on Friday.
Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptulla said, "If you don't want to work then I might adjourn the House for the day."
When the opposition members refused to relent and continued with their demand for Naik's resignation, Heptulla adjourned the House for the day.
However, the members observed a minute's silence in memory of martyrs of the Quit India movement before the House was adjourned.
Earlier, Deputy Chairperson appealed to the opposition members not to stall the proceedings.
"Let us do some work. There is drought in the country and the agriculture minister (Ajit Singh) is here," she said as Congress members continued to demand resignation of Naik.
Congress member Janardhan Poojari was seen waving a newspaper. BJP member Sangh Priya Gautam asked the members to be calm. Heptualla said, "because of one issue we are not taking up other issues," and asked opposition members not to resort to slogan shouting.
Sensing the mood, she adjourned the House till Monday.
