Congress candidate for Mumbai civic poll attacked by rivals

A Congress candidate for the forthcoming civic election in Mumbai, was allegedly beaten up by a rival group in Thane on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

The victim, Jairaj Mhatre was admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji hospital, the police said.

Congress sources alleged that Mhatre was 'brutally attacked by NCP candidate Anant Thakur and his supporters'.

Senior Congress leader Subhash Kanade said, "The NCP is indulging in such acts as it is afraid of losing."

Following the incident, Congressmen complained to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who ordered the police to take stern action against the culprits, Kanade said.
