Teegala Krishna Reddy of the ruling Telugu Desam Party on Monday took oath as the new mayor of Hyderabad amid strong protests by Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and Congress Party.
Krishna Reddy, who was elected as mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad polls last month, was administered the oath of office by MCH Commissioner and special officer P K Mohanty at MCH office even as MIM refused to accept him as mayor.
The swearing-in ceremony was marred by controversies as the newly elected corporators had a tough time entering the council hall.
The MCH authorities had issued limited number of passes for entry into the hall but chaos prevailed as supporters of various parties tried to force their way to the newly built hall.
MIM, which emerged as the single largest party in the last month's elections to 100-member civic body, has refused to accept the election results accusing the TDP government of tampering with the results to deny victory to MIM mayoral candidate Mir Zulfeqar Ali.
Congress party also lodged strong protest against the MCH authorities for not allowing its corporators to enter the council hall.
Amid slogan shouting by five legislators belonging to MIM and Congress, Mohanty administered the oath to Krishna Reddy, the first elected head of the civic body in 15 years.
Wearing black badges to mark their protest, MIM legislators and corporators raised the slogan of 'murder of democracy' throughout the swearing-in ceremony.
Tempers ran high as legislators and corporators belonging to TDP and BJP raised counter slogans.
The MIM and Congress corporators refused to take oath along with their TDP and Bharatiya Janata Party counterparts. They were separately administered the oath.
In the elections to MCH, held after a gap of 15 years, MIM emerged as the single largest party with 36 corporators. TDP-BJP combine got 37 divisions, while Congress bagged 20 divisions. Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Majlis Bachao Tahreek got two divisions each. Telangana Sadhana Samithi and an independent won one division each.
