Anthrax fear resurfaces, two postmen take ill

The fear of anthrax reared its ugly head in Mumbai again with two postmen taking ill after inhaling 'suspected' spores contained in a season's greeting envelope, which also had a photograph of a person resembling Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden.

The postmen, Abdul Aziz Maldar (36) and G K Wadekar (46), who complained of giddiness and chest pain after inhaling the powdery substance contained in the envelope, were rushed to Nair Hospital on Wednesday.

The postmen, working at Cumballa Hill post office, who displayed symptoms akin to a patient affected by anthrax, have been kept under medical observation, hospital sources said.

The postal packet, discovered by a female postal worker, was brought to the notice of the Maldar and Wadekar, who inhaled the white powdery substance while examining it.

The powder pouch has been sent to Haffkine Institute for analysis and interim results are expected on Thursday, sources at the institute said.

Meanwhile, an unconfirmed report said that one of the two postal workers admitted has been discharged by the Nair hospital.
