Tehelka scribe appears before CBI in poaching case

Tehelka reporter Kumar Badal on Wednesday appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with a case of poaching of endangered leopards in Shivalik forests of Uttar Pradesh.

Badal appeared along with his colleague Anirudh Bahl and lawyer at the agency headquarters in New Delhi after failing to appear on Monday due to health reason.

Earlier, Badal read out a statement in which he termed the CBI action "as yet another attempt by the government to defy freedom of the press".

Badal was not available during the searches conducted at his residential and official premises by the CBI on June 26.

According to the CBI, Badal was working under the name of 'Pankaj', for whom two poachers Inam and Meherban, arrested earlier, had been working.

During the interrogation of the poachers, currently in judicial custody, it was found that the duo used to get in touch with 'Pankaj' on a cell phone number '9810290047'.

The CBI seized documents relating to the mobile phone, belonging to Buffalo Networks Private Limited, the parent company of Tehelka, from the residence of Badal.

The case pertained to killing of three leopards in Biharigarh area of Shivalik division under sections 9, 49, 49-A and 51 of the Wildlife Act of 1972 and 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy).
