HC dismisses PIL on Eastern Railway bifurcation

The Calcutta high court on Friday dismissed a public interest litigation on the proposed bifurcation of Eastern Railway to create a new railway zone -- East Central Railway, headquartered in Hajipur in Bihar.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice A K Mathur and Justice Jayanta Biswas observed that the court would not interfere in government's administrative decisions.

The PIL alleged that the setting up of the new zone was politically motivated as Hajipur happened to be the parliamentary constituency a former railway minister. The incumbent railway minister too hails from Bihar.

The PIL claimed that the Rakesh Mohan Committee had also disapproved of the bifurcation move.
