Students, parents, teachers in Mumbai protest fee structure

Hundreds of teachers, parents and students in Mumbai on Wednesday staged a protest over the Maharashtra government's new fee structure in aided English medium schools under which children would have to pay tuition fees based on parents' annual income.

The protestors, under the aegis of the Parents Teachers' Association, marched from central Mumbai towards Azad Maidan near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, where scores of children in school uniform staged a dharna.

The state government, in its May 24 order, had linked students' tuition fees to their parents' annual income and divided students into six groups depending on family income.

Holding placards and banners, teachers, students and guardians raised anti-government slogans saying the new fee structure would create economic divisions among students and was 'unacceptable'.

"Don't create division between rich and poor", "Education is imparted not by money" some of the placards read.

The students also blocked traffic on the busy D N Road to draw the government's attention to the issue.

Education Minister Rajendra Shingne, meanwhile, assured the protestors that the government would review its decision.
