A day after lifting travel restrictions on India, the United States on Tuesday issued a fresh warning to its citizens against journeying to Pakistan and 'strongly' urged those already there to leave the country fearing terrorist attacks against them following conviction in the Daniel Pearl murder case.
"In the light of the convictions and sentencing of four men charged with the kidnapping and murder of an American reporter and the ongoing concern about further terrorist actions against American citizens, we reiterate our warning to citizens to defer travel to Pakistan and strongly urges American citizens in the country to depart," the US state department said in a statement.
However, Attorney General John Ashcroft has assured Pakistan's ambassador Maleeha Lodhi that the US is not targeting Pakistani immigrants for deportation, the Pakistan embassy in Washington said in a statement.
Over 400 Pakistanis were deported recently for overstaying and other violation of immigration laws.
Ashcroft, the embassy said, promised Lodhi that the US will cooperate with the Pakistani government in future deportations of detainees on immigration matters.
He also assured consular access and legal representations to Pakistani detainees as well as arrangements for the speedy and dignified repatriation of those detainees who had been ordered repatriated by US courts.
