Ordering a probe into the DNA samples fudging incident, an embarrassed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday washed his hands off from the highly volatile and disgraceful scandal.
On March 25, 2000 the state police had claimed that 'five foreign terrorists involved in the massacre of 35 Sikhs at Chattisinghpora had been killed in an encounter at Pathribal in Anantnag district'.
However, widespread doubts about the identity of the slain persons led to the government ordering a probe into the incident.
The DNA samples were those of the next of kin of the slain persons.
"I have learnt from newspaper reports that the DNA samples sent of the five persons killed in Pathribal to Hyderabad and Kolkata have turned out to be spurious," Dr Abdullah told the state assembly in a suo moto statement.
"Our government is disturbed by the reports," he added.
Apologising to the house on the government's behalf, Dr Abdullah said, "I feel ashamed that there were agencies and institutions that could possibly behave in such an atrocious manner."
Retired high court judge Justice G A Kuchay would head the one-man commission and submit his report within two months, the chief minister said.
"All those involved in collecting and sending the fake samples would be dismissed from service and prosecuted," he told the assembly.
