21 undertrials, 6 policemen injured
in clashes in Belgaum jail

At least 21 undertrials and six police officers were injured in clashes between two groups of prisoners at the central jail in Belgaum in Karnataka on Monday.

The clashes began after an inmate, Gajanan Bapu Navagekar, made an unsuccessful attempt to escape through the main gate, senior officials said.

After Navagekar's was prevented from fleeing, some of his associates assaulted jail warden Manjunath and a clerk. As the word about the attack spread in the jail, clashes erupted between two groups of prisoners.
