Communal violence erupts in Bijapur, tension in MP

Several shops were set on fire and vehicles damaged in communal clashes, which broke out after a religious book was allegedly burnt at a place of worship at Indi town in Bijapur district in Karnataka on Thursday, a senior police official said.

The mob set ablaze a truck, a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus, a few two-wheelers and shops, Superintendent of Police Charan Reddy said.

A petrol pump and six houses were also partially damaged, police said.

Five persons were injured in the incidents, they said.

Police have been deployed in sufficient strength and the situation was under control, a district official said.

Police said they have arrested 24 people, including activists of the VHP and Bajrang Dal, in different parts of the district as a precautionary measure in view of the proposed 'shila pujan' programme on Friday.

Meanwhile, tension gripped Amjhera village in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh after a place worship belonging to a minority community was damaged on March 12, a senior police officer said in Dhar on Thursday.

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, Dhar Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shami said adding the damage to the building was minor.

Shami said the situation in the district was well under control and police had been deployed in strength to prevent any untoward incident keeping in mind Friday's VHP-organised 'shila pujan' programme in Ayodhya.
