Mumbai blasts: TADA judge receives threats

Designated judge Pramod Kode, hearing the 1993 serial blasts case, has received threats to his life in two letters asking him to be rehamdil (merciful) while dealing with the accused, official sources said in Mumbai on Monday.

The letters, received by Kode recently by post, spoke about the 'almighty' (Allah) being merciful and suggested that he also adopt a similar attitude while delivering the judgment, failing which he would have to face the consequences.

The anonymous letters, written in Hindi, were forwarded to the police for investigations, the sources said.

This is not for the first time that the judge has received threats.

One of the earlier letters had even said that being a Hindu, Kode should not sit in judgment on offences committed by a member of the minority community.

"Our majlis (assembly) has already exonerated the accused and therefore you should follow suit," the letter had said.

Among the accused in the Mumbai blasts case are gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon, both of whom are at large.
