Case against AP Wakf Board chief for attack on police station

The Hyderabad police have registered a case against Andhra Pradesh Wakf Board chairman Mohammed Salim and 15 of his followers for attacking Kamatipura police station on the night of May 12.

In his complaint, Inspector Riyasath Ali Khan alleged that Salim and the others barged into the police station, pelted stones and damaged furniture demanding withdrawal of a criminal case against one of his relatives.

Salim, who is a ruling Telugu Desam Party leader, is also accused of trying to assault Riyasath Ali Khan and threatening to complain to higher authorities when the latter refused to oblige.

The incident was sparked by the death of Firdaus Fatima, a close relative of Salim, who set herself ablaze on April 30 and died in a city hospital on May 12.

Based on her dying declaration, the police registered a dowry harassment case against her husband Zakir Khan and her in-laws at the Kanchanbagh police station.

On receiving news of Firdaus Fatima's death, her in-laws visited her parents' house at Kamatipura.

The meeting degenerated into an altercation in which Zakir Khan's brothers Mohammed Adam Khan and Azim Khan sustained head injuries.

Fatima's relatives Khaja, Masoom and Mustafa also damaged a vehicle.

Following this, police officials from the Kamatipura station rushed to the spot and registered a case.

On hearing this, Salim rushed to the police station and asked the police not to book any case against his relatives.

Instead, he wanted them to book a case against Fatima's in-laws. When Inspector Riyasath Ali Khan refused, Salim's supporters went berserk and attacked the police station.

However, Salim claimed that he had gone to the police station to evolve a compromise between the two groups.

Bahadurpura Circle Inspector Radhakrishna has been directed to investigate the case against Salim.
