Mayawati to face trial of strength on Friday

Heading a BSP-BJP coalition, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati faces the first trial of strength when she seeks a vote of confidence in the state assembly on Friday as directed by Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri.

Mayawati was sworn in as chief minister on May three and asked to prove her majority within three weeks.

While staking claim to form the government, Mayawati had given a list of 211 MLAs supporting her.

The arithmetic in the 403-member house with an effective strength of 399 (four seats are vacant) is clearly in favour of the BSP-BJP alliance, which has the support of 203 MLAs (BSP-97, BJP 88, RLD 14, JD-U 2 and LCP 2).

The combined strength of the Samajwadi Party-led opposition is estimated at 179 with SP 142, Congress 25, Kalyan Singh-headed Rashtriya Kranti Party 3, Apna Dal 3, CPI-M two, Samajwadi Janata Party, Janata Party, Lok Janshakti Party and Rashtriya Parivartan Dal one each.

The Hindu Mahasabha and the Nationalist Congress Party also have one legislator each and independents number 15.
