Security beefed up in Ayodhya for June 2 yagya

The end of the 100-day purna ahuti yagya in Ayodhya on June 2 has forced the Uttar Pradesh administration to review the security arrangements in the temple town.

A state home department spokesman said: "Since the yagya is expected to draw a large number of karsewaks, along with several top Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders, we cannot take any chances."

He also did not rule out the reimposition of 'curfew-like conditions' in Ayodhya, similar to the conditions created in the wake of the March 15 deadline for shila-pujan given by the VHP leaders.

VHP chief Ashok Singhal has, however, issued a 'warning' to the state government to refrain from imposing similar restrictions on or before June 2.

He was stated to have been provoked by a security drill last week, which was similar to the deployment during the shila pujan.

No sooner than Singhal was told about the rehearsal, he called up senior BJP leader and prominent BJP minister Lalji Tandon to intervene and ensure that 'March 15-like conditions' were not repeated this time.

Tandon, however, reportedly declined to make any comment on what he proposed to do.

Meanwhile, according to intelligence sources, Ayodhya was also on the hit list of Kashmiri terrorist groups.

Uttar Pradesh police chief R K Pandit told rediff.com: "We have to keep ourselves prepared for any eventuality well before June 2 and not compromise with the security in Ayodhya."
