Tandon offers to quit Uttar Pradesh BJP Legislature Party post

In an apparent effort to smooth out the ruffled feathers of the dissidents, Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party leader Lalji Tandon on Thursday offered to quit from his post, provided the rebels 'dropped their demands' and 'returned' to the party fold.

"I have no craze for any post, be it the leader of the legislature party or any ministerial berth in government. If my stepping down can save the party from the ongoing standoff, I would be too happy to quit," Tandon said.

The dissident legislators had earlier demanded Tandon's resignation from his post. They also demanded that all BJP ministers resign, and wanted the party to provide support to the Mayawati government from outside.

Another of their demands was the withdrawal of criminal cases against the BJP and independent legislators.

Tandon said he was waiting for directives from the party high command and if he got any signal, he would immediately convene a meeting of the legislature party and propose the name of a new leader.

"Whosoever would be elected, [even if it is] Ganga Bhakt Singh, I would consider him as my legislature party leader," Tandon said.
