Scindia to be new Congress economic cell secretary

R Prema in New Delhi

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Congress Member of Parliament and son of the late Madhavrao Scindia, is to succeed Jairam Ramesh as secretary of the party's economic cell.

Party president Sonia Gandhi decided, however, not to replace Dr Manmohan Singh as chairman of the cell. The members of the cell will also remain unchanged.

Ramesh's replacement is likely to be resented by supporters of economic liberalisation within the Congress. The suave and articulate journalist-turned-politician has several admirers in industry groups and was one of the draftsmen of the globalisation programme set in motion by the P V Narasimha Rao government a decade ago. At that time, he was joint secretary to the prime minister.
