Mayawati seeks police records of all MLAs

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has asked senior police officers to collect the criminal records of legislators and submit them within a week.

Officers in different districts have also been asked to collect information on legislators from their areas so that a clear picture is obtained and chances of bias are reduced.

Interestingly, the Election Commission had earlier collected information on the criminal history of legislators in Uttar Pradesh and found that more than 200 had criminal cases registered against them.

A senior police officer said that after the moves to topple her government began, Mayawati asked the police to collect information on the criminal records of the dissident legislators. Later, she sought information on all legislators, including members of the legislative council.

The police had reportedly carried out a similar exercise about four months ago. As per the report obtained then, almost all political parties have legislators with criminal backgrounds. Some of the ministers in the present government have more than 24 criminal cases registered against them.
