Thailand seeks confirmation of Bay of Bengal firing incident

Thailand on Tuesday said it was seeking confirmation from India on whether the fishermen who allegedly opened fire on Indian trawlers in the swamps off the Bay of Bengal were Thai citizens.

"It is not clear if they are Thais because the Indian authorities could not confirm that with us," said an official at Thailand's foreign ministry.

He said the Thailand embassy in New Delhi contacted Indian officials about news reports that nine Thai trawlers fired on Indian boats on Saturday to scare them away from the rich fishing grounds.

Indian officials have not been able to confirm reports that more than 200 Indian fishermen were missing after the attack and that the Thai intruders had seized 50 Indian trawlers, he said.
